In the beginning “Is What It Is” had twelve Buddha’s. There was a laughing Buddha and one who cried. There was a warrior Buddha who none could stand against. A peaceful Buddha who was surrounded by an ocean of calm. There was a Buddha of Invention and a Buddha of Tradition. There was a messenger Buddha who continually travelled throughout the universe bringing news. There was a still Buddha who observed everything and seldom spoke. There was a passionate Buddha who plunged into experience after, experience. There was also a Buddha who appeared as a child. He loved playing ball with the fire-breathing lions that guarded the inner court where “Is What It Is” made decisions. There was also a very ancient Buddha whose beard was so vast that stars nested in it. The twelfth Buddha was chosen by the eleven as soon as he was conceived in his mother’s womb. Being human he only serves for his lifetime. This is his legend the one called the Cowboy Buddha.
I met John Bridgins at the Gorilla Monsoon in 2008 near the corner of Queen and Spadina. He had just arrived from New Zealand and was eager to meet and play with some local musicians. When John sings it is with an emotional honesty that I believe is also prevalent in his songwriting and character. I love being able to find just the right accompaniment to add dynamics and dimensions to his songs. I really believe in sharing the music that we play and I hope you enjoy what we offer here.
